About Us

The Employee Climate Action Network was formed in response to a global emergence of organizations, academics, and researchers working to support employees in advocating for climate action and leadership at work.

Our members have the resources, tools and support networks that employees need to take action and create positive change within their organizations. Through this network, employees are joining and creating communities dedicated to sharing ideas and best practices across organizations and networks with a focus on action.

Why now? Research shows that employees are ready and willing to take action to support climate leadership and sustainability at work. Kite Insights' "Every Job is a Climate Job Report" finds that:

80%
of employees are ready and willing to take action on climate change in their jobs
70%
are ‘very’ or ‘quite interested’ in training related to climate action at work
45%
are ready to become pioneers of climate action within their teams and functions
70%
say that acting on climate change at work is important to their personal sense of motivation and well being
However, this research also finds that fewer than half felt ‘very’ or ‘quite able’ to take action!

Similarly, the 2024 Deloitte Sustainable Consumption report (a global study across 20 countries) found:

  • 63% of respondents do not think their employers are doing enough to address climate change and sustainability
  • 21% say they have considered switching jobs to work for a more sustainable company
  • 39% would like to see their employers speak publicly on climate change and environmental issues
And there’s proof that employee action works: 59% of business leaders say employee climate action has caused them to increase their sustainability efforts.
History

Over the past two years, ECAN has grown into a positive force for workplace climate action.

From its first international roundtable in June 2023, which laid the foundation for a decentralized, collaborative network, to each consecutive gathering, ECAN has continuously expanded its reach and impact. Through successive roundtables, members have refined advocacy strategies, strengthened alliances, and built critical resources to support employee-led climate action.

In 2024, ECAN members participated in the u-School for Transformation Accelerator Program, refining strategies for employee action and systemic change. This program emphasised the importance of movement infrastructure, collaboration over competition, and creating platforms for employee-led climate action. It inspired three workstreams: a Virtual Resource Hub, a Solidarity Resource Hub, and a Media Hub to amplify employee stories.

As ECAN continues to evolve, its focus remains on amplifying employee voices, fostering global solidarity, and embedding climate action into the heart of corporate structures.
