Delicious! Too Good for the Bin

Action against food waste – throwing food away is a thing of the past! As part of German Overshoot Day and #whatmakesushappy, the Re:think sustainability team raised awareness of food waste at a central information stand. Employees learned how AU handles canteen leftovers, explored ways to rescue food, and discovered local food-sharing initiatives and platforms. Rescued food from Foodsharing and Too Good To Go was also available to take home.

What gave you the courage to start?

The team’s enthusiasm for the topic and the support of our manager.

The Outcome

While there was no measurable result, the level of interest was high. Even members of the management team took the opportunity to learn more at the booth. The workload remained manageable thanks to alternating shifts, and working together on the initiative further strengthened the motivation and team spirit of the Re:think team.

The Impact

We encouraged a more open-minded approach to food that is no longer perfectly fresh, has minor imperfections, or does not meet conventional standards. We raised awareness that food which is discarded can often still be perfectly good and safe to eat. We also provided information about German Overshoot Day and highlighted Germany’s impact and responsibility within the global community.

The Biggest Challenge

Not everyone from the Re:think team was able to be there on the day. However, everyone contributed as much as they could, and the event ran smoothly.

The Biggest Learning

Together, we can achieve a lot! More colleagues showed genuine interest in the topic than we expected. We also learned that a wide range of useful information and resources is available from federal and state authorities as well as consumer advice centres.

Most Enjoyed

We especially enjoyed working together to make the initiative happen and receiving positive feedback from our manager and Managing Director.
