Bicycle-Friendly Company

The ADFC “Bicycle-Friendly Employer” certification helps companies introduce and promote bicycle-friendly infrastructure and practices. It supports sustainability, employee health, and employer appeal while helping to reduce costs in the long term. The three-year certification process includes a self-assessment, audit, consultation, and recommendations. Companies select the measures that best suit their needs and, once certified, are featured as positive examples on the official website.

The Outcome

The project has led to lasting improvements for employees who cycle, with several Schindler sites receiving official ADFC certification as Bicycle-Friendly Employers. Bicycle parking, repair facilities, company bikes, and employee discounts have been introduced, while cycling events, newsletters, and mobility surveys encourage participation and raise awareness. The project promotes sustainable mobility while also strengthening a sense of community and Schindler’s appeal as an employer.

The Impact

The project has made cycling a more integral part of the company culture. A committed core team drives the initiative both strategically and operationally. Improved infrastructure, cycling-related benefits, and stronger internal communication have made cycling a more attractive option for employees. Events and networking across locations have strengthened team spirit, while awareness of cycling as a healthy and sustainable mode of transport has grown.

The Biggest Challenge

The biggest challenge was maintaining momentum and commitment over a longer period while working on the project voluntarily alongside regular day-to-day responsibilities. Turning ideas into action and creating lasting change required a great deal of patience, perseverance, and good time management.

The Biggest Learning

The biggest learning was how important it is to identify the right stakeholders within the company and involve them at an early stage. Lasting change requires the support of people who are not only responsible for the relevant areas but also open to new ideas and willing to help drive them forward.

Most Enjoyed

What we enjoyed most was the combination of taking initiative, receiving positive feedback, and seeing a tangible impact. The self-organised bike tours and the strong response to the mobility survey were particularly motivating. We are also proud that other locations followed our example and are now either certified or going through the certification process. It showed us that our commitment can make a difference and inspire others.
