Book – An organisational guide to skills for green workforce transformation

Readers of this book will gain practical insights into addressing green transition challenges related to climate, decarbonisation, biodiversity, and social equity through strategic skills development. The green transition requires more than technical specialists—it demands that every employee, in every role, contributes to organisational transformation. This means developing a broader skill set across the entire workforce and leveraging transferable skills alongside technical competence.

What gave you the courage to start?

After researching sustainability professionals' experience through a project with Climate Change Coaches, called 'Holding back climate progress - sustainability's critical skills gap', I was approached by a publisher to turn the report into a book. Rather, I wanted to develop a book that enabled leaders to share their expertise in their own authentic voices - which became the seed of this book

    The Outcome

The book, which was published by July 2026 by Routledge is made up of 22 chapters, 45 authors from 15 countries and 17 organisations. The book will be launched at a webinar at the end of September, featuring authors. It brings together trade associations, corporates, NGOs and small/community enterprises. The chapters are all structured around consistent frameworks of transferable and transformative skills, and 'Project Drawdown's' 'Drawdown aligned framework'

    The Impact

Our hope is that this book reaches a broad global audience, providing insights as to the importance of transferable and transformative skills - so that every job is a climate and nature job. The opportunity to learn from diverse industry leaders, across global contexts, sharing expertise on engaging their workforce will hopefully enable organisational leader to build action for resourcing and valuing skills development.

    The Biggest Challenge

Ensuring global diversity in authors across sectors, and in ensuring consistency in practical recommendations

    The Biggest Learning

The importance of transformative skills - while there is relative understnding of transferable skill sets, there is much to learn from transformative skills such as drawing on traditional/indigenous wisdom and longer term thinking mindsets - and how this can be integrated into organistional models
