Book Exchange Box – Sharing Instead of Buying

A book exchange box is more than just a shelf – it brings people together, promotes learning, and reduces resource consumption. A small, easy-to-implement idea that can make a big difference.
Project Goals
Changing Awareness & Mindsets & Raising Awareness Across the Organization

Focus Area
Circular Economy & Waste Management & Resources

The Outcome

The introduction of the book exchange box at the Schindler Campus in Berlin has successfully established a culture of book sharing among employees.

The Impact

By giving books a second life, the project helps reduce waste and encourages more conscious consumption. It is a first step towards raising awareness of the sharing economy, demonstrating how sharing can become part of everyday life and inspiring further ideas for sustainable action.

The Biggest Challenge

The biggest challenge was waiting for approval from Facility Management, particularly due to safety and fire protection requirements.

The Biggest Learning

Employee engagement is key. The idea came directly from employees and demonstrated the potential of individual initiative. We learned that even projects requiring little financial investment can create meaningful cultural and environmental value. The book exchange box also proved more effective than more elaborate, organised book exchange events.

Most Enjoyed

Seeing new books appear on the shelf and knowing that the books we contributed had found new readers.
